Off the grid

This is the home of my friend in Spain, where I spent a few days.  He lives on three hectares of land, planted with fruit trees, almonds and pines, and is completely off the grid there.  The electricity comes from two solar panels, and is stored in batteries.  The rainwater collected from the roof supplies all the needs for the house.  A system of tanks downslope from a cleared area lined with plastic sheeting and covered with pebbles, provides water for the trees.  He only recently moved there but is planning also a vegie garden.  For transportation, he has electric and manual bikes, and there is a bus service to a nearby village.  It’s inspiring to see that he can live like this, with a comparatively low impact upon the environment.
